The FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act) guarantees that workers receive at least the federal minimum wage for every hour they work. The law also requires that workers receive overtime at 1-1/2 times their rate of pay for any hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a week. Ohio has a similar law, although Ohio’s minimum wage of $8.80 currently exceeds the federal minimum wage of $7.25.
There are some exceptions to the minimum wage numbers, including tipped employees, handicapped or disabled workers. Several occupations also are exempt from the law: farm and seasonal workers, newspaper deliverers, and informal jobs, such as babysitting.
Please contact us if your employer is violating the minimum wage and/or overtime pay requirements.
