Mediation is a procedure by which parties negotiate a resolution to their dispute with the assistance of a third party mediator. A resolution may not be imposed on the parties to a mediation. Rather, if the parties do not reach an agreement, the mediation process ends.

Mediation is a required or highly encouraged step in many (if not most) legal proceedings in Ohio. Some Ohio courts have mediation departments and full-time mediators on their staff.
