Both federal and state law protects Ohio employees from hostile work environments. While virtually everyone has experiences with a demanding supervisor or annoying co-workers, if the conduct of a boss or a co-worker is such you become unable to do your job well, are afraid for your safety or even forced to resign, you may be experiencing an illegal hostile work environment.
A hostile work environment occurs if you are a member of a protected class who has been subject to unwelcome harassment based on your membership in that protected class; that harassment is severe or pervasive enough to change the terms of your employment; and your employer knew or should have known about the harassment but did not attempt to remedy the situation. Conduct based on your race, color, religion, sex (including sexual orientation, gender identity or pregnancy), national origin, older age (above age 39), disability or genetic information is not permissible and may give rise to a cause of action based on a hostile work environment.
